4th International Conference of the Memory of the World Programme of UNESCO „Culture –Memory –Identities”. Warsaw (18-21.05.2011)
We have the pleasure to inform you that the 4th International Conference of the Memory of the World Programme of UNESCO entitled „Culture –Memory –Identities” will be held in Warsaw, Poland, on 18-21 Mai 2011, organized jointly by Head Office of Polish State Archives, Polish National Commission for UNESCO and Polish Committee for the Memory of the World Programme.

Madam/Sir,
We have a pleasure to inform you that the 4th International Conference of the Memory of the World Programme of UNESCO, entitled “Culture – Memory – Identities” will be held in Warsaw, Poland, on 18-21 May 2011, organised jointly by Polish authorities and UNESCO.
As you may know, the Memory of the World Programme, established in 1992, is UNESCO’s main programme for promotion of all humanity’s documentary heritage, its accessibility and preservation for future generations, and, consequently, an important forum for the debate concerning its social and cultural role and the role of collective memory - or memories - in the life of various societies and international community.
Within the recent years, growing interest in the Programme can be observed in several regions of the world. The international Memory of the World Register, created within the Programme in 1997, presently counts 193 items from all continents.
We appreciate the Memory of the World Programme and its Register for its inclusiveness and long-term impact on promotion of cultural diversity as a social value, on better understanding between different social groups, societies, cultural circles and civilizations, fostering mutual appreciation and respect, and for its conduciveness to raising awareness of interdependence between various cultures and societies in elaborating of what can be called common heritage of humanity. The Programme has also a strong potential in promoting professional point of view among decision makers in the fields of documentary heritage accessibility, preservation and promotion.
For the above reasons, in our view the Memory of the World Programme deserves particular attention and reflection against the background of contemporary global and regional situation. We hope that the 4th International Conference in Warsaw can be a useful opportunity to look at the Programme and its fields of competence in a broader context of interrelations between cultures, memory and identities and related challenges to be responded nowadays, as well as various international initiatives dealing with documentary heritage, intangible heritage and cultural diversity. English and French interpretation of the debates will be secured.
In due time we will provide you with more details concerning the conference’s programme and organisation. We hope very much that you will be interested in participation in the conference. Please also feel free to contact us in case you would intend to organise a side event related to the theme of the conference.

Nous avons le plaisir de vous annoncer que la Quatrieme Conference internationale du Programme « Memoire du Monde » de l’UNESCO sur le theme « Culture – Memoire – Identites » se deroulera a Varsovie, en Pologne, entre le 18 et le 21 mai 2011. La conference est organisee conjointement par les autorites polonaises et l’UNESCO.
Comme vous n’etes pas sans savoir, le Programme « Memoire du Monde », etabli en 1992, est le programme principal de l’UNESCO dans le domaine de la promotion du patrimoine documentaire de toute l’humanite, son accessibilite et sa preservation pour les generations futures et, par consequent, constitue un forum important pour le debat concernant son role social et culturel et le role de la memoire collective - ou memoires collectives – dans la vie de differentes societes et de la communaute internationale.
Au cours des annees recentes, nous avons observe un interet croissant pour le Programme dans plusieurs regions du monde. Le Registre international « Memoire du Monde », cree dans le cadre du Programme en 1997, compte a l’heure actuelle 193 unites provenant de tous les continents.
Nous apprecions le Programme « Memoire du monde » pour son caractere global et l’impact qu’il exerce a long terme sur la promotion de la diversite culturelle en tant que valeur social, sur l’entendement entre les groupes sociaux, societes, millieux culturels et civilisations divers, sur l’encouragement de l’appreciation et du respect mutuel, ainsi que pour son role en tant qu’acteur sensibilisant le public à l’interdependance qui lie les cultures et les societes differentes dans le processus de l’elaboration de ce que nous appelons le patrimoine commun de l’humanite. Le Programme dispose aussi d’un potentiel considerable en promouvant le point de vue professionnel dans le millieu des decideurs agissant dans les domaines de l’access au patrimoine documentaire, sa preservation et promotion.
Pour ces raisons-la, nous croyons sincerement que le Programme « Memoire du Monde » merite une attention particuliere et une reflexion approfondie dans le contexte de la situation actuelle, autant au niveau global que regional. Nous esperons que la Quatrieme Conference organisee a Varsovie constituera une excellente occasion permettant d’evaluer le Programme et ses champs de competence dans un contexte plus large des relations mutuelles entre les cultures, la memoire et les identites, et qu’il creera un forum de debat sur les defis qui doivent etre adresses aujourd’hui et de differentes initiatives internationales relatives au patrimoine documentaire, au patrimoine intangible et a la diversite culturelle. L'interpretation sera assuree de et vers l'anglais et le francais.
