INDEX Programme
INDEX Programme for the Remembrance of the Poles Murdered and Repressed by the Nazis for Aiding the Jews
The INDEX Programme initiative has been raised by circles linked to the Cracow Institute for Strategic Studies.
The main objective of the Programme is reliable and trustworthy historical research on the scale of Nazi repressions against the Poles who provided aid to the Jews during the occupation, and the commemoration of the victims.
The INDEX Programme Council composes of the following persons:
Professor Władysław Bartoszewski - the Chairman
Dr Sławomir Radoń - General Director of the State Archives
Professor Israel Gutman - Yad Vashem Institute in Jerusalem
Professor Janusz Kurtyka - President of the Institute of National Remembrance
Dr Piotr Setkiewicz - Manager of the Archives in Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.
The Programme Council acknowledges that the INDEX Programme will extend our knowledge on the fates of the Poles murdered or otherwise covered with repressions for aiding the Jews, at the same time contributing to a better understanding of both history and a range of human behaviour, from the most noble to the most cruel.
The INDEX Programme is not a political, national or religious undertaking. Its purpose is not to justify any material claims by the surviving heirs of the victims. Moreover, its intention is not to negate a historical truth about the Poles who co-operated with the Nazi occupant. The history of those who saved others? lives belongs to the Polish nation, also being a part of the history of the Jewish nation and the history of Europe.
We intend to conduct a reliable query at archives, search for information and documents to be obtained from direct witnesses, their descendants or acquaintances, as well as through mass media. The outcome of that research will be presented in the form of a database, publications, exhibitions and conferences.
We believe that the INDEX Programme will strengthen the civil society, allowing for gaining a better knowledge and understanding of the patterns of behaviour worth cherishing and following. We hope that the INDEX Programme will contribute to a better recognition of the common Polish-Jewish history and culture.
The success of the INDEX Programme depends on organisational and financial support. Therefore, we hereby address Polish and foreign institutions and organisations, mass media, scientific centres, individual researchers and other persons interested in the success of the Programme with a request for co-operation. All those willing to assist us in our efforts in good will, without prejudice, not following any stereotypes, and on a not-for-profit basis, are kindly requested to contact us.
We particularly appeal to direct witnesses of events, their descendants or acquaintances. Your accounts will be of great help and priceless value, constituting a necessary supplement to queries conducted at archives.
