- Military archives – the most recent records are gathered at Centralne Archiwum Wojskowym (Central Military Archives) (00-910 Warszawa-Rembertów) and at the archives of various military formations.
- Biuro Informacji i Poszukiwań Polskiego Czerwonego Krzyża (Information and Inquiry Office of the Polish Red Cross) (ul. Mokotowska 14, skr. poczt. 47, 00-950 Warszawa) provides assistance in searching for relatives, the contacts with whom was lost during the Second World War.
Numerous information on victims of repressive measures in the East has been acquired by the centre Ośrodek KARTA (ul. Narbutta 29, 02-536 Warszawa). Centralne Biuro Adresowe (Central Address Bureau) (ul. Kazimierzowska 60, 02-543 Warszawa) keeps records on persons currently residing in Poland. When requesting information, however, it is necessary to give at least the forename and the surname of the person being searched for and the approximate date of his/her birth.
Due to the complex history of Poland – war operations, partitions, and emigration of many Poles – numerous documents are to be found outside the Polish borders. They are preserved by Polish archives and other institutions abroad as well as by archives and institutions of foreign states. Inquiries may be started by contacting the boards of archives in these states and carried out through the mediation of Polish consular posts in a given country.
